More than 100 athletes from across Australia lined up for round 1 of the inaugural Super Surf Teams League held at Bulli, NSW yesterday.
With 15 events across the sand and in the ocean, WA fielded three of the 13 teams, comprised of athletes from Trigg Island, North Cottesloe, Mullaloo, Sorrento, City of Perth and Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Clubs and, with consistent performances across the board, it was the Scarborough Sunsets who closed out round one sitting in second place behind the Queensland Country Canecutters.
The action kicked off on the sand with reigning beach sprint champion Symonds unbeatable as he claimed top spot for the Scarborough Sunsets, with fellow clubbie Charlie Rigby (Margaret River Waves) hot on his heels in 2nd, and Matthew Lloyd (Broome Pearlers) in 5th. Symonds continued his form, taking 3rd in the beach flags against the best in Australia.
In the water, U17 Trigg Island athlete Will Savage (Broome Pearlers) timed his finish to perfection, taking the win in the Surf Race against a much more experienced field and clocking up the Broome Pearlers only event win. The Mixed Ocean Lifesaver Relay also proved a strong event for the Pearlers as Savage, along with Wes Gould, Courtney Franz and Sophie Lloyd finished top of the pack in 5th.
An extremely tight finish in the female field saw Jade Mickle (Scarborough Sunsets) take 2nd in the Female Surf Race. Also impressive was U17 athlete Harriet Brown (Broome Pearlers) with a 6th place finish in the Female Ski, while Wes Gould took 5th for the Broome Pearlers in the Male Ski.
The mixed 2-person ski relay saw Dan Humble (Scarborough Sunsets) lead from the get-go, handing over to team mate Jaime Roberts who brought it home for a comfortable win, with the Margaret River Waves coming home in 5th .
The second round of the Super Surf Teams League will head to Surfers Paradise on December 15.
All the Super Surf Teams League action from round 1 will be broadcast on FOX Sports Australia next Sunday 8 December from 2pm – 4pm AEST.
