Surf Life Saving Australia’s summer of surf sports will heat up as the first round of the Super Surf Teams League hits the sand on December 1 at Bulli NSW.
The Super Surf Teams League is a surf carnival-style competition, based on WA’s own SunSmart WA Surf League which is now heading into its third year, and will feature three rounds over summer from December to January in conjunction with the Nutri-Grain IronMan & IronWoman Series.
Thirteen teams from across Australia, including three from WA, will compete in the inaugural 2019 season in Ski, Swim, Board and Run events, as well as the mixed Ocean M Lifesaver Relay. Thirty-four WA athletes have been selected to participate across the three rounds, with all costs being fully subsidised by Surf Life Saving WA (SLSWA).
SLSWA High Performance Officer Andrew Mosel said that this was another great opportunity for WA athletes to mix it with the best in Australia.
“SLSWA recognises how important it is for our athletes to be able to compete and test themselves against the best in the country,” said Mr Mosel.
“With the bulk of elite Australian surf sport competition being held on the east coast, it often proves cost-prohibitive for many of our athletes to participate which is why we continue to commit resources to ensure our WA athletes are not disadvantaged due to travel costs.”
The Super Surf Teams comprise of four male and four female athletes and, with teams named after geographic locations, WA will field the Margaret River Waves, Scarborough Sunsets and Broome Pearlers.
Dates and locations for the 2019/20 Super Surf Teams League:
- Round 1 – 1 December 2019 – Bulli, NSW (Round 3 of Nutri-Grain Iron Series)
- Round 2 – 15 December 2019 – Surfers Paradise, QLD (Round 4 of Nutri-Grain Iron Series)
- Round 3 – 19 January 2020 – North Cronulla, NSW (Final round of Nutri-Grain Iron Series)
