Our Western Suns Surf Rowers Interstate team put in an outstanding effort for WA across an action packed weekend at the 2018 Australian Surf Rowers League Interstate Championship, held in Elouera, NSW.

In a weekend that saw a fantastic display of racing, along with plenty of carnage as the athletes tackled the big surf, our teams didn’t let their enthusiasm get washed away by the challenging and unfamiliar conditions, clinching a 4th place finish in the Interstates competition.

Friday saw plenty of action as WA showed some strong performances, claiming gold in U23 Women and silver in Open Women; the U23 Men, Reserve Men and Open Men all took 4th place while the Reserve Women placed 5th and U19 Men 6th. A special shout out goes to the U19 women, who were very brave in the face of some tough surf conditions.

Team Manager, Jodie Forlonge (North Cottesloe), had only praise for the group, commenting on how well they handled the rough and unfamiliar conditions.

Congratulations to NSW who took the victory on 87 points; with QLD in 2nd on 87 (countback); SA in 3rd (76), ahead of WA with 70 points, VIC in 5th place on 69 points and TAS in 6th place on 52 points.

Also making the trip across to NSW was an additional 10 club teams, who battled it out in the Australian Surf Rowers League Open, with many impressive performances. Six WA teams made it through the elimination rounds where we saw athletes from North Cottesloe and Mullaloo SLSC in putting on some impressive displays of racing. The Reserve Women (North Cottesloe) took a silver medal, while the U23 Women (North Cottesloe) made the top eight; and U19 Women (Mullaloo) the top 12. North Cottesloe teams in U23 Men, Open Women and Open Men also had strong performances, finishing in the top 16.

Congratulations to all athletes for their outstanding efforts across the weekend – everyone demonstrated great displays of racing, walking away from a big weekend with a taste for excitement and more than a few bruised legs!
