My Beach

The 2023 SunSmart WA Surf Life Saving Championships were officially underway with the Lifesaving events this weekend, hosted by City of Perth SLSC at City Beach.

With clear skies and light onshore winds, athletes were thankful the recent heatwave had passed to allow for a full day of competition on beach featuring elite lifesaving skills.

Eight clubs took part in the day, with tight contests in many of the Champion Lifesaver age groups across both the theory and practical sections.

Special mention to Neve MacLeod (Mullaloo) and Zachary Brown (City of Perth), both dominating their respective Open water events and ultimately taking out gold in the Open Champion Lifesaver events.

The closest competition of the day went to the up and coming youth athletes, with the U14 Females having only 0.25 points separating Eva Hill (Mullaloo) who won gold with 92 points over Poppy Finucane (North Cottesloe) with 91.75 points.

Champion Patrol featured three clubs competing for the U17 title across theory and water rescue based events, plus a beach patrol scenerio. Congrats to the team from Sorrento SLSC, taking the title, over Mullaloo SLSC (2nd) and Scarboro SLSC (3rd).

Congratulations to all participants across the weekend, from athletes to officials to spectators.

We would like to extend a thank you to our surf sports and naming rights partner Healthway, promoting the SunSmart message. Their support enables us to deliver a comprehensive, year-round surf sports calendar, including these Championships.
