Wrapping up a massive summer of surf sports, last weekend saw nearly 1,000 nippers from 23 clubs battle it out over three days in the final of our championships series, the SunSmart WA Nipper Surf Life Saving Championships.
Kicking off on Friday night under lights at Scarborough Beach with the beach flags and sprints, the atmosphere was electric, providing our young athletes with an exciting and encouraging environment to put their hard earned skills to the test.
While weather on Saturday was calm, winds picked up Sunday whipping up a solid swell and challenging the skills of our young nipper athletes as they contested the ocean events. It was fantastic to witness their determination as they faced down the conditions.
It was a close contest all weekend, with Sorrento leading the charge right up until the last few races on Sunday, when Trigg Island took the lead and carried it home for their 3rd consecutive year, cementing their dominance and capping off what has been an outstanding season for the club who also took the 2019 Senior and Masters Champion Club titles.
Finishing only 23 points behind Trigg Island in second was Sorrento, with Cottesloe in third.
The Nipper Handicap Trophy, which recognises the most improved club, was also hotly contested with Sorrento winning by just two points over Cottesloe.
As we wrap up our summer season, we would like to thank our surf sports and naming rights partner Healthway, promoting the SunSmart message, as well as competitors, officials, work crews and spectators who have once again made the SunSmart WA Champs one of the most highly anticipated events of the year.
