Another outstanding performance at Sorrento Beach this morning saw City Red take their third win, and a clean sweep of the 2019/20 SunSmart WA Surf League series, ahead of North Cottesloe White in 2nd and Trigg Island Red in 3rd.
Scarboro Black got off to a strong start in the Mixed 1km run with the first male and female runner across the line in Ben Johnson and Hannah Jones. Trigg Island Green’s Ben Waterman and City Red’s Tyson Wright rounded out the top 3 men while 2nd and 3rd in the female was down to a sprint finish with North Cottesloe’s Ocatvia Peel just edging out Trigg Island Red’s Nyah Gray.
First on the water, the exciting Open Mixed Single Ski Relay saw most teams start with their male paddler, hoping to get the early lead on the field. The battle between Steve Bird (North Cottesloe White) and Dan Humble (Trigg Island Red) did not disappoint, Bird first onto the sand to tag partner Harriet Brown. Fast off the mark, Trigg Island Red’s Jazmin Shipway Carr, had a nose and the inside line on Brown by the first can, extending the lead to come home with the win ahead of North Cott White in 2nd, Brett Cassidy and Asa Nowell for North Cott Blue in 3rd. City Red’s Nikita Fredonnet and Ben Carrick relegated to a surprising 4th having won the event last round, when it was first introduced into the series.
While a strong swim leg saw Fremantle’s Phoebe Ashworth lead the Open Ironwoman field into the board, it didn’t take long for Fredonnet, Ceris Humble (Trigg Island Red) and Soraya Lee (Mullaloo Blue) to reel her in, Fredonnet ultimately taking the win ahead of Humble with Lee in 3rd.
The Open Female Board Race again saw Fredonnet Humble go one two, with North Cottesloe White’s Kiera Albertsen in 3rd.
The Open Mixed Board Relay was dominated by Trigg Island teams, Red & Green taking 1st and 2nd, respectively, with City Red in 3rd.
In the Open Ironman, the battle was between City Red’s Matt Colliss and Trigg Island Red’s Will Savage. Going wide and getting the run to the beach on the board, Savage hit the lead and held on, coming home for the win, Colliss in 2nd and Max Hunter (Trigg Island Green) in third.
In the youth events, the Ironwoman saw Sophie Baron-Hay (City Red) lead from start to finish, as she capped of an impressive series with two wins and a 2nd place finish in the event. Scarboro Black’s Alice Harwood was consistent coming home with a much improved 2nd place, while the battle for third saw City Black’s Mia Nesbitt getting the edge over Mullaloo Blue’s Jenna Stummer.
The youth Ironman saw a tight pack onto the beach after the swim, North Cott White’s Johann Szymanski first onto the sand, keeping his lead to take the win ahead of Trigg Island Red’s Jarvis Caren in 2nd & City Black’s Nathan Hunt in 3rd.
The Youth Mixed Cameron Relay saw a tightly bunched field throughout, City Red making a last minute break for it to take the win in an exciting all out sprint to the finish line, North Cott White and City Black neck and neck to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively.
On the sand, the women’s beach sprint saw a dead heat between Sorrento team mates Sydney Rafferty (Sorrento Dolphins) and Amy Brennan (Sorrento Stingrays), who again went head to head in the beach flags, Rafferty getting the win over Brennan in second and Cottesloe Pylons Alicia Ward in 3rd. City Red’s Imogen Herrington took 3rd in the beach sprint.
After missing round 2, Jackson Symonds was back and in form, taking the wins in both the sprint and flags for the Sorrento Stingrays. Dominic Banks-Smith (North Cottesloe) took 2nd in the beach sprint, ahead of Aaron Gigney who also pocketed 3rd in the beach flags, behind Trigg Island Red’s Edward Host who, in a physical final, wasn’t able to steal the win from Symonds.
In the male surf boat arena, City Red capped off the series with their first win, coming into the beach neck and neck with North Cottesloe White, just getting the edge in a sprint to the finish, with City Black in third. In the women’s field, it was North Cottesloe Blue ahead of Scarboro Black, North Cott White in 3rd.
Full point score at the end of day 3 saw City Red sitting on 357 points; North Cott White on 331, and Trigg Island Red on 328.
