The 2017 Aussies Youth Championships, held the weekend of 25 – 26 April 2017 at North Kirra, Queensland saw WA athletes step up with some impressive performances.

The standout event on the national stage for WA is the 2km Beach Run and this year proved to be consistent with multiple gold medal winners.

Hannah Jones (Sorrento SLSC) backed up last year’s U14 Aussies win and this year’s U15 WA state title to take out home the Aussies gold in the U15 Female event.

WA dominating duo of Ben Waterman (Sorrento SLSC) and Zachariah Coleman (Fremantle SLSC) battled it out, finishing with the gold and silver in the U15 Male 2km run.

Waterman ran away to record an impressive all-the-way win ahead of his mate Coleman who was quick to congratulate the winner, saying, “if I’m going to finish second, I’m glad to finish second to you Ben.”

Their fierce rivalry saw the results turned at the recent 2017 SunSmart WA Surf Life Saving Championships where Coleman took home the State title.

With the water conditions on the east coast being significantly different to the west coast, it’s always a battle for our water athletes to dominate on the national stage. This year though, saw Will Savage (Trigg Island SLSC) enter the Aussies ranks with an impressive gold medal in the U14 Male Ironman.
