Our athletes from WA and the Western Suns Open Elite Surf Team took on the final round of the Ocean 6 series at North Cronulla over the weekend, with clubs from across Australia battling across four days of competition from Thursday, 22 to Sunday, 25 February.
The competition was a key opportunity for our WA athletes, who were selected for their performances across the WA Surf League, to challenge themselves against some of Australia’s most elite surf sports athletes, and prepare for the SunSmart WA Surf Life Saving Championships and The Aussies, which will be held in the upcoming months.
While conditions for the competition started sunny with big surf (4-6 foot waves), athletes were put to the test in their finals on Sunday, as the conditions became cold, wet and windy.
Sorrento SLSC young gun and SLSWA Open Athlete of the Year Jackson Symonds continued to show his strength on the beach with a 1st place in the Open Sprint and 2nd place in Open Flags! The Trigg Island SLSC Taplin Team, made up of Ceris Graham, Maddy Thomson and Macarah Mallis, had a great group performance and finished 3rd in the final.
The full strength field of athletes provided a great lead into the upcoming Australian Titles at Scarborough beach, where our athletes will have the home beach advantage.
Individual highlights came from:
- Tom Nolan (North Cottesloe SLSC), who placed 5th in the Open Sprint and 7th place in Open Flags;
- Sydney Raffety (Sorrento SLSC), who had a great run and placed 3rd in U17 Sprint; and
- Jack Wilson (Mullaloo SLSC), who had a strong run, taking 3rd place in U17 Surf Race, 6th in Open Surf Race and 7th in the Open Run Swim Run;
- Maddy Thomson (Trigg Island SLSC), who came 5th in U17 Surf Race, 10th in Open Surf Tace and 12th in the Open Run Swim Run;
- Reece Baker (Trigg Island SLSC) who finished in 7th place in the Open Ski Race.
A special shout out to Jade Mickle (City of Perth) who put in a great effort across the competition, coming 6th place in Open Ski, 11th in Open Surf and finishing 6th in the Ironwoman trial final, narrowly missing out on qualifying into the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Series by one spot.
Congratulations to all athletes for their huge efforts across the competition!
