My Beach

In conjunction with our major partner Healthway, promoting the SunSmart message, we set out to find our most SunSmart nipper and youth members in WA!

We put the call out to members between 5-17 years old to find out why being SunSmart is important to them and nearly 80 people responded with some great photos and stories to show us their “Sun Smarts.”

Thank to Healthway, the major winners of the competition took home a bunch of awesome prizes, including a Nipper board or racing Mal, long-sleeved rashie, 1L sunscreen, Havaianas, sunglasses, fins, SPF 50+ zinc, swimming cap, UV reacting water bottle, bucket hat, Robies robe and pop-up beach cabana! There were also a bunch of minor prizes on offer.

Healthway CEO, Susan Hunt PSM said it was great to be partnering with Surf Life Saving Western Australia to provide sun protection education for Western Australians.

“It’s really important we encourage children and young people to adopt sun safe behaviours that will prevent skin cancer,” Ms Hunt said.

“The photo competition was a creative and fun way to do this, and I congratulate Skye and Riley for their winning photos capturing the Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide message.”

Skye was lucky enough to receive her prize pack on Saturday at the SunSmart WA Nipper Surf Life Saving Championships from Healthway representative Vienna Dryka.

Major Prize Winners

Nipper Winner

Name: Skye McCaffrey

Club: North Cottesloe SLSC

Skye’s entryI like to compete in outdoor sports and if I’m not SunSmart I could get cancer, sunburnt and eye damage. I check the app for the UV level and always use sunscreen even if it is cloudy. I use 6S’s – Skye must Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide.

Youth Winner

Name: Riley Coote

Riley’s entry:  I’m a redhead so could be more susceptible to malignant melanoma. I wear a hat and full wetsuit to protect me. Mum created a special hat that covers my ears/neck and stays on in the waves. I want a long healthy life so I have to protect my skin.
