Surf Life Saving WA’s inaugural Rookie Lifeguard Program proved an overwhelming success as the first intake of eager recruits hit Surf House last week, ready to tackle a range of activities designed to provide insight and skill development directly related to employment as a Lifeguard and other Support Operations roles within SLSWA.
Sessions including underwater search techniques, simulated helicopter diver drop training, fitness testing, SurfCom and radio operations, and Drone Patrol demonstrations gave recruits a taste of the training and skills required to take the step into professional lifeguard services, or to serve in the various club based support operations capacities such as Wesfarmers Jet Ski Teams or Drone Patrol.
“Literally one of the best weeks I’ve had, such an amazing program and a great experience.” – Katie Wadell, Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club.
“Awesome experience that shows you what life is like to be a lifeguard with heaps of fun activities mixed in and some awesome and experienced instructors to help and teach you along the way.” – Cooper Whiting, Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club.
Congratulations also to the top ten recruits (picture below), who were selected from amongst their peers based upon their performance throughout the Program across a range of areas including fitness, CPR and a formal interview; and were then invited to participate in a further week-long immersion program within SLSWA’s Lifesaving Services.
