My Beach

The competition was fierce for the third and final round of the WA Surf League, at Sorrento Beach last Sunday morning.

With a record 17 teams stepping up to do battle, it was a determined City Black who claimed the round 3 win, and a series clean sweep, though not without fierce competition from Trigg Island Red and North Cottesloe A who were hot on their tail the entire day.

On the sand, City Black’s strategy of elevating beach sprinter Brittany Huitenga into the team paid dividends as she took the win in the beach sprints, as did teammate Gabby Murphy in the flags, relegating Sorrento A’s  Sydney Rafferty to second in both events.

On the men’s side, Jackson Symonds (Sorrento A), at his home beach and with a cheer squad of Sorrento nippers chanting his name, continued his winning form taking 3 from 3 in the beach sprint, ahead of club mate Charlie Rigby (Sorrento B), and flags ahead of Tom Nolan (North Cott A).

On the board, the battle was between Kelton Mulvay (Trigg Island Red) and Matthew Colliss (City Black), who were sitting at one a piece coming into round 3. With a strong start Colliss led from the get go, managing to keep Mulvay behind him all the way to the finish line.

On the women’s side, Nikita Fredonnet (Trigg Island Red) pulled off the series hat trick on the board, with Ceris Graham (Trigg Island Green) finishing in 2nd.  On the ski Graham was first onto the sand but chased down and caught in a sprint to the line by North Cottesloe A’s Asa Nowell. After a rough start which saw her sitting around 10th coming into the first buoy, round 1 and 2 winner Keira Albertsen (City Black) fought back to finish a respectable 4th, while in the men’s event, Dan Humble (Trigg Island Red) finished round 3, and the season, undefeated.

The swim event was down to the wire, with Jake Smith (Trigg Island Red) getting the edge over Max Anderson-Loake (City Black) in a photo finish, while Soraya Lee (Mullaloo B) backed up her round 2 win with a comfortable first place finish ahead of Ruby Warne (Trigg Island Red) and Chalise Pratt (Trigg Island Green).

On the youth side, City Black’s Alexandra Slocombe continued her impressive form with her second win of the series in the Youth Ironwoman event, with Aysha Ferguson (Trigg Island Red) in second and Mia Nesbit (City Red) in 3rd.

In the Youth Ironman event, Lucas Wilson (Sorrento B) took the round 3 win ahead of Oliver Brehaut (Secret Harbour) and Kai Marchetto (Trigg Island Red), neither of whom have been out of the top 3 the entire series.

North Cottesloe maintained their dominance in the surf boat arena, showing the depth of their women’s crews, taking out first, second and fourth while the men’s North Cott A Team came in 2nd behind City Red and ahead of Secret Harbour.

In the team events, Trigg Island picked up some important points, coming in second behind Sorrento A, and ahead of City Black, in the Youth Mixed Cameron, while in the Mixed Taplin it was Trigg Island Red and Trigg Island Green with City Black rounding out the top 3.

Congratulations to all involved. We look forward to seeing you back for the 2019/20 WA Surf League series in December 2019.
