After three days of tough competition, WA’s Western Suns have made the west coast proud, coming away with a third place finish at last week’s Interstate Pool Rescue Championships, just 17 points behind NSW.

Run concurrently with the Australian Pool Rescue Championships, the 24 strong Western Suns team was joined by other WA athletes as they battled it out for state and club glory against over 600 of Australia’s best pool rescue athletes at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

Callan Smith (Trigg Island) was the first Western Suns member to place, taking bronze in the U19 Male 200m Obstacle. Over the next two days, he went on to win seven more medals, one gold, three silver and three bronze, the most of any WA athlete competing in the championships.

Harrison Hynes and Tupou Chong Sue (Fremantle) proved two to look out for, achieving silver in the U17 Male 4x6m Line Throw Relay. Harrison then went on to win gold in the U17 Male 50m Swim with Fins and bronze in the U17 Male 100m Rescue Medley, while Tupou, took bronze in the U17 Male 100m Manikin Tow with Fins.

Day one wrapped up with the interstate relays, where Western Sun’s Callan Smith, Lachlan Meldrum, Tupou Chong Sue and Harrison Hynes proved the team to beat, winning gold in the U17 Male 4x50m Medley, 4x25m Manikin and 4x50m Medley relays. Our Western Suns went on to claim a further two silver and eight bronze in the relays, closing out day one strongly.

Western Suns team captain Jake Smith (Trigg Island) lead the charge into day two, taking silver in the first event of the day, the Open Male 100m Manikin Tow with fins. He then went on to win gold in the Open Male 4x25m Manikin Relay; silver in the Open 50m Male Swim with Fins; Open Male 50m Manikin Carry; and bronze in the Open 200m Super Lifesaver; Open 100m Manikin Carry with Fins.

It was day two that the women in the team had their time to shine as Chalise Pratt (Trigg Island) kicked it off with silver in the U17 Women 200m Super Lifesaver and bronze in the U17 Women 100m Manikin Tow with Fins, before joining teammates Dayna Tindall (Trigg Island), Lily Moore (North Cottesloe) and Sascha Innocent (Trigg Island) to take silver in the U19 Women 4x50m Medley Relay.

Morgan Knox (Scarboro) showcased her talent in the U15 Women 100m Manikin Tow with Fins, earning silver, then going on to take bronze in the U15 Women 50m Manikin Carry

Overall, our Western Suns athletes showcased great talent and determination across a range of events and should be very happy with their achievements.

Special mention to Trigg Island’s Daniel Beales who had an outstanding event, kicking off on day one as the first WA athlete to medal, taking gold in the U13 Male 100m Obstacle. He then went on to set two new Australian records, the U13 Male 25m Brick Carry with a finish time of 31.93, beating the previous record by 1.02s, and the U13 Male 50m Swim with Fins record.

Congratulations to all athletes who made the trip east to compete.

Thank you to Engine Swim, the official apparel partner of the Western Suns, and to Team Manager Graham Snook and Assistant Manager Bronwyn Meldrum.
