Surf Life Saving WA collects and analyses a range of coastal drowning data and lifesaving patrol information to identify coastal safety trends and issues and to provide an evidence base for drowning prevention strategies in WA.
Coastal drowning data including demographical information and drowning location, time and activity are collected from the National Coronial Information System (NCIS) and collated in the WA Coastal Drowning Database. Patrol information (including beach attendance, rescues, first aid treatments and preventative actions) are collected by SLS frontline services and collated in the SurfGuard database.
Data gathered and stored by SLSWA is used to provide advice to the WA Coroner as well as state and local governments. It may contribute to various projects such as media releases, drowning reports, funding applications, coastal risk assessments, priority setting and new coastal safety initiatives.
