We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Floreat Surf Life Saving Club, Surf Life Saving WA, & Surf Life Saving Australia Life Member, Robert “Bob” Howard ESM OAM.

Bob’s involvement and commitment to Surf Life Saving spanned decades, beginning at Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club where he attained his Bronze Medallion in 1966. Shortly after, he joined Floreat SLSC, where he remained a member to the current day, committing countless hours across a variety of roles.

As a patrolling surf lifesaver, in 2005, Bob was awarded the National Medal in recognition of 15 years of patrol service and the Nation Medal – 1st Clasp (2018) for 25 years of patrol service – an outstanding period dedicated to serving the community.

Bob was instrumental in the development of the VN6SA (now known as SurfCom), the radio network that connects all WA Surf Life Saving Clubs and Emergency Services.

He was also heavily involved in Training and Assessing, being awarded the WA Assessor of the Year in 2006.

In recognition of his service at a Club, State and National level, Bob was awarded Life Membership of Floreat Surf Life Saving Club (1988), Surf Life Saving WA (1990) and Surf Life Saving Australia (2009).

In 2019, Bob received the Emergency Services Medal for service to Surf Life Saving Western Australia and the Floreat Surf Life Saving Club and for his role in the establishment of the VN6SA.

A stalwart of the Floreat SLSC, our sincerest condolences go out to family, friends and loved ones.
