My Beach

After relocating from Mullaloo to Sorrento Beach due to severe weather warnings, 117 brave competitors from six clubs took to the ocean to face some strong swell and fierce competition, in the 2019 WA IRB Racing Championship last Sunday.

In what could be seen as a miracle, the skies cleared and the weather held out for the duration of the events where we saw some fast and furious action as lifesavers put their rescue skills to the test in challenging conditions.

Despite some close finishes, reigning champs Mullaloo lived up to their title taking gold in 7 of the 11 racing disciplines, being named Champion Club for their third consecutive year. It was a close contest for second place between Scarboro and Fremantle, until the final few races where Scarboro locked down the points to come in second, just two points ahead of Fremantle.

In addition to the Champion Club title, Mullaloo claimed two of the 2019 series points trophies, taking home the Frank Senior Award for overall highest points of the season; and the Dave Clarke Shield for best Male Rescue Crew, awarded for the fourth consecutive year to Joshua Bull and Robert Payne for their outstanding performances.

Congratulations to Scarboro’s Emily Regan and Hannah O’Neil, who were awarded the Combined Marine Shield for the best Open Female Crew of the season.

A huge thank you to all officials and staff who braved the elements to ensure the day was a success. Special mention to Mullaloo and Sorrento, both of whom were extremely accommodating in light of the relocation process!
