Congratulations to WA members Chris Brien and John Summers, who have been awarded the Emergency Services Medal (ESM) in this week’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The ESM recognises distinguished service by members of emergency services across Australia, and people who are involved in emergency management, training, or education.

Chris has given an exceptional 30 years of service to Surf Life Saving in Western Australia, playing a pivotal role in the Esperance region, both in frontline operations and club management, including nine years as Club President. Since 2007, Chris has been the Duty Officer and local coordinator of SLSWA’s Emergency Response Jet Ski Teams in the Great Southern, and has been at the forefront of coordinating Marine Search & Rescue activity in the region alongside WA Water Police & Marine Rescue. Chris is also a qualified trainer and assessor.

John has contributed a remarkable 25 years of service to Fremantle SLSC and has been on the Club Board for more than 15 years. Aside from his dedication as a patrolling lifesaver, John has also been the Duty Officer and been a team leader of SLSWA’s Emergency Response Jet Ski Team since 2007. To date, John has committed almost 1,500 hours to beach patrols and has been responsible for coordinating search and rescue efforts and jet ski operators under the direction of Water Police, playing a pivotal role in the response to significant incidents at sea. John is also a qualified trainer and assessor.
