How to enrol

Current financial members of Surf Life Saving WA affiliated Surf Life Saving Clubs should first view the available course dates below, then email the Training and Education Team with their SLSWA Member ID. Once your membership has been verified, we‘ll book you into your selected course.

Before you enrol

There are no formal entry requirements. You must be at least 13 years old and have a basic understanding of spoken and written English.

You must be able to perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin on the floor and an infant manikin on a firm surface.

If you require support or reasonable adjustments to participate in the course, please let the Training and Education Team know when enrolling so we can discuss available support.

By enrolling, you acknowledge that you have read the SLSWA Learner Handbook, including transfers, cancellations, venues and learner support.

Course overview

This course provides the practical first aid skills needed to manage common emergencies in community and workplace settings, including CPR and AED use.

What you will learn

  • Recognising and responding to an emergency using DRSABCD
  • CPR for adults, children and infants, including AED use
  • Asthma, anaphylaxis, choking and allergic reactions
  • Bleeding, wounds, burns, fractures, sprains and strains
  • Medical emergencies, including chest pain, stroke, seizures and diabetes
  • Environmental emergencies, bites, stings, poisoning and drowning
  • Incident reporting, review and rescuer wellbeing

Delivery and assessment

Delivery: Face-to-face, 1 day. Training, theory and assessment are completed during the session.

Assessment: Complete a theory paper and demonstrate first aid and emergency-response skills, including CPR on adult and infant manikins and AED use.

Certification

On successful completion of all course and assessment requirements, you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for:
  • HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
  • HLTAID010 – Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
  • HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
The Code of Practice: First aid in the workplace recommends that CPR skills are refreshed annually and first aid skills are refreshed every three years.
