Refresh your practical surf rescue and first aid skills to maintain your Community Surf Rescue Certificate

Successfully completing the requalification renews your Community Surf Rescue Certificate for a further 12 months, maintaining its recognition under Department of Education water safety guidelines and its acceptance by schools, outdoor education providers, surf programs and commercial aquatic operators.

Before you enrol

If you are unsure whether your previous qualification is suitable for requalification, please contact the SLSWA Training and Education Team before enrolling.
To successfully complete the course, you must be physically able to:
  • complete a 100 m run, 100 m swim, 100 m run within 5 minutes
  • complete a 200 m swim using a recognised stroke within 5 minutes
  • participate in practical aquatic rescues and CPR activities.

What you will learn

  • Surf hazards, risk assessment and beach safety
  • Beach surveillance and Surf Life Saving Australia signals
  • Self-rescue techniques and surf skills
  • Contact rescues, rescue tube rescues and rescue board rescues
  • Casualty handling and spinal injury considerations
  • CPR and first aid for aquatic emergencies
  • Managing drowning, asthma, anaphylaxis, bleeding, bites and stings
  • Incident communication and casualty handover

Delivery and assessment

Delivery: Face-to-face practical training and assessment over approximately 3 hours, focusing on refreshing existing knowledge and practical skills.
Assessment: Complete fitness assessments and demonstrate practical surf rescue, CPR and first aid skills. There is no written theory assessment as part of the requalification course.

Certification

On successful completion of all course and assessment requirements, your Community Surf Rescue Certificate will be renewed for a further 12 months.

Looking for both Community Surf Rescue and a nationally recognised CPR qualification?
SLSWA can deliver the Community Surf Rescue Certificate together with HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation as a combined training program for schools, community groups and organisations.
