A dominant performance across the racing season saw Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club finish as strongly as they started, taking out Champion Club at the 2018 WA Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Racing Championships held at Scarborough Beach yesterday and retaining their 2017 State Championships title.

With clear conditions and a slight swell, the competition was fast and furious and provided exciting viewing for Scarborough beachgoers as they watched competitors from surf life saving clubs across WA battle it out in the final round of the 2018 racing series and the State Championships.

In addition to yesterday’s State title, Mullaloo also took a clean sweep of the 2018 series point’s trophies, winning Champion Club as well as Female Rescue crew, comprised of Ashlyn Bulley and Sienna Lipscombe, and Male Rescue crew of Joshua Bull and Robert Payne who narrowly clinched the victory by one point over Fremantle’s James Birkmanis and Benjamin Pink.

Unique to Surf Life Saving, the sport of IRB racing is exciting and fast paced, seeing crews put their skills to the test in simulated rescue events, with the objective being to rescue a patient or patients in the water.  These events are designed to mirror scenarios a lifesaver may encounter while on patrol at the beach, reinforcing and developing the skills necessary to save lives on the beach.

Rounding out yesterday’s championship podium finishes were Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club in second and Fremantle in third.
