Surf Life Saving WA’s second annual Rookie Lifeguard Program hosted an outstanding group of recruits, all eager to challenge themselves and tackle a range of demanding activities.
Over the 5-day program, rookies participated in sessions that included rescue board control in the surf, simulated diver drop training with the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service crew, fitness testing (including the lifeguard “mission”), SurfCom and radio operations, RWC familiarisation and Advanced Lifesaving Techniques.
The week gave recruits exposure to the various Lifeguard and Support Operations opportunities available within SLSWA and club-based support operations and a taste of the skills required to successfully step into professional services.
“Incredibly enjoyable week full of truly valuable experiences.” – Angus, Albany SLSC
“What a week! This program gave everyone the opportunity to have a good time, meet new people and gain an understanding of what being a Lifeguard is like.” – Lauren, Esperance Goldfields SLSC
“I loved the Rookie Lifeguard Program! It’s a great transition from volunteer lifesaving to paid lifeguarding. Over the course of the week I made plenty of new friends from all over WA and learnt valuable life skills.” – Dom, Swanbourne Nedlands SLSC
A big congratulations to the top ten recruits (picture below) who, based upon their performance throughout the Program, were selected from amongst their peers to complete an immersion week with SLSWA’s Lifesaving Services.
The final selection was extremely difficult, with areas of assessment including demonstrated leadership and attitude, fitness, First Aid/CPR scenarios and a formal interview video.
