Surf Life Saving WA offers a range of free courses delivered in person and online throughout the season, to introduce members to the roles available to them.
Hours accrued in performing any of the roles below are counted towards the SLSWA Youth Recognition Program.

Youth Official

Every surf sports competition needs a dedicated and well trained team of officials. The Youth Official course will teach you to become an impartial and balanced judge across all surf sport competition disciplines.

Covering officiating roles including timekeeping, marshal, check starter, and more, you will learn the basic skills and knowledge of all officiating disciplines and fulfil your official obligations with accuracy, consistency and a high degree of integrity.

Youth Age Manager

Use your passion for education and training to assist and mentor a group of Woodside Nippers during their Sunday morning program.

The Youth Age Manager course is an introduction to the pathway of Age Manager, where you will gain the skills and knowledge required for water safety at Woodside Nipper activities and events, and help deliver safe, fun, and inclusive surf education, teaching Nippers beach safety and confidence in the ocean.

Youth Coach

Youth Coaches work in a range of coaching roles at clubs. You will have the opportunity to work with athletes across all levels of competition and performance as well as being mentored at club training sessions in all areas of surf sports.

As a Youth Coach trainee, you will develop the skills and expertise in the three general disciplines of surf sports: swim, beach, and board, and you will be mentored through the basics of coaching surf sports athletes through a range of practical assessment and online learning.

Youth Trainer

Get the perfect introduction to SLSWA Training and Education by becoming a Youth Trainer. You will develop the skills and knowledge to deliver components of SLSWA education courses and awards, such as First Aid and the Surf Rescue Certificate.

The course is run by SLSWA accredited Trainers and you will learn about the role and responsibilities of a trainer, develop key communication skills, and learn how to work with parents and guardians.
