With the recent release of the summer drowning and lifesaving statistics, on behalf of the Board of Surf Life Saving WA, President Heidi Gan commended the efforts of WA clubs and lifesavers over the past summer, stating that the work done had been nothing short of exceptional.
The release of the statistics revealing WA experienced 12 coastal drowning deaths paints a clear picture as to how much worse it could have been were it not for the actions of surf lifesavers across West Australian beaches.
Between 1 December 2024 and 28 February 2025, surf lifesavers performed 773 rescues, a more than 150% increase (2024=298) on last summer. Each of these rescues represents a near miss and, potentially, a life saved.
Along with the 74,874 preventative actions and 2,154 first aids, our lifesaving services provide a return to the West Australian community valued at more than $430 million.
Amongst the drowning statistics:
- 100% occurred at unpatrolled locations away from SLS services
- 75% male
- 40-49 year olds were identified as high risk, accounting for 58% of coastal drowning deaths in WA.
- Rip currents remained the number one coastal hazard – contributing to 86% of WA’s beach drowning deaths (drowning deaths occurring on beaches).
- Swimming/wading was the leading activity prior to drowning (33%), followed by bystander rescuer (25%) drowning deaths and boating (17%).
With plenty of hot weather still to come, along with the Easter and school holidays, we know that our lifesavers will remain out in force watching over West Australian beachgoers. On behalf of the community, the Board thanks them for their service.
