First aid training has changed. No, there’s not a new letter in the DRSABCD acronym — SLSWA courses are now designed to reflect the distancing and hygiene requirements brought about by COVID-19. The health and safety of our course participants have always been our highest priority. The reality of coronavirus means Surf Life Saving WA has put protocols in place to keep people safe during first aid training as well as real-life situations.
For starters, all SLSWA first aid trainers have undertaken Federal Government online COVID-19 Infection Control training. That means you can feel confident in the high hygiene standards and practices in any of our first aid training courses.
COVID-safe first aid training
Note that all first aid training class sizes have been reduced to allow four square metres per person.
Completing a CPR course during COVID
Note that some sections of our CPR course may require closer than usual contact, though industry-leading non-contact options are available upon request.
There is no requirement to breathe into CPR training manikins. Instead, participants will blow down the side of manikin’s face to demonstrate correct ventilations. SLSWA’s smaller class sizes and additional equipment also means we can minimise the need for sharing manikins.
Another change we have implemented to ensure every first aid course is COVID safe includes the use of compulsory PPE such as gloves.
First aid course: saving lives is in your hands.
Proper hand hygiene is encouraged and discussed during the course.
Online first aid training
Online training resources are available to reduce the amount of face to face contact required to gain or maintain your first aid certification. Reviewing online training resources will better equip you to respond in an emergency; however, qualification or requalification can only be obtained through SLSWA via an in-person assessment.
As well as the public courses, SLSWA offers private training for businesses with on-site delivery at your chosen location.
We will continue to monitor the situation and update policies as it becomes necessary. All first aid training will be assessed for risk prior to commencement to ensure that it meets all Federal and State Government requirements.
Book your first aid training
Through this crisis, we’re continuing to help the community through first aid training, equipping everyday Australians to be lifesavers. You can now book your first aid training online, or, if you have any questions, please contact SLSWA on 9207 6666 from 8:30 am – 5 pm, Monday to Friday or email training@slswa.com.au
