If you’ve been following our blogs recently, you may have noticed we’ve placed a great deal of emphasis on drawing awareness to safety in the workplace, and in particular, first aid training in the workplace.
With workplace injuries and illnesses on the rise, we believe its best practice to ensure that your workplace is (and remains) first aid ready.
Workplace health and safety laws require first aid training, policies and equipment remain up-to-date at all times. If no such policies are in place, or you believe your staff are in need of training or a refresher course, then a workplace first aid course is a must – this way you’re assured your workplace is first aid compliant.
Corporate first aid training courses provide staff with the useful tools needed to save a life in the workplace. A workplace CPR course also provides staff with essential teamwork and social skills, improving communication and building staff morale.
Are you confident your business has an up-to-date first aid policy in the workplace? Are your staff members and employees up to date with their first aid training? You may never know when you may need to use first aid, but when it’s a matter of life and death and every second counts, it could save a life.
How Do I Assess First Aid Risk in the Workplace?
All workplaces are different, and as a result, first aid emergency procedures in the workplace vary from one office to the next. What may be a first aid policy for a small business may not necessarily be the right policy for an office or warehouse work environment.
As such, there are a range of factors at play when deciding what first aid policies are right for your workplace. These include:
- The type of work undertaken
- The hazards unique to your particular workplace
- The size and location of your workplace
- The number of employees and their movement throughout the workplace.
The number of employees and the size of your business does play a major factor in remaining first aid compliant. Safework Australia’s rule of thumb is, there should be one first aider on staff for every:
- 50 workers in low risk environments (offices)
- 25 workers in high risk environments (construction sites)
- 10 workers in remote high risk environments (mines)
Whatever the nature of your environment, it is important that your workplace has the correct training and policies in place to tailor to your specific needs.
SLSWA First Aid Courses
Surf Life Saving Western Australia runs a range of nationally recognised first aid training courses in Perth and Western Australia, all tailored to the needs and demands of your specific workplace.
Our courses can be conducted at your business for groups of eight people and above, or can be held at our training facility in Balcatta.
Whether its the first time or a refresher course, first aid training is an important skill for all employees and employers.
Qualifications and Certifications
Enrolling in the HLTAID003 Provide First Aid course is easy. By completing these courses, you and your staff will be nationally accredited and issued with a statement of attainment for competently completing all assessment tasks – this is important if you work in industries that legally require you to remain up to date with your first aid training.
The HLTAID003 Provide First Aid course is the industry standard, and must be completed every three years to maintain competency. This qualification includes the HLTAID001 Provide CPR and HLTAID002 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support awards, and must be requalified every three years. The individual HLTAID001 Provide CPR award must be updated on a yearly basis.
As skills can lapse if you don’t renew and requalify your awards, we recommend you stay up to date with first aid and CPR certification and renew on time.
