Following the disappointment of last year’s last-minute event cancellation, this weekend saw nearly 900 eager Nippers from 22 WA clubs hit Scarborough Beach to contest the 2021 SunSmart WA Nipper Surf Life Saving Championship!
Events kicked off under the lights of the Scarborough Beach amphitheatre on Friday evening where our athletes took on the beach flags and sprints, and it was Sorrento who came out on top with five event wins for the evening, helped along by U11 Trent Yates who claimed gold in both the beach flags and sprints for his club.
Trigg Island also had a good showing, with U12 Macy Boisvert taking the double gold; however, Mullaloo’s consistency across the board combined with their efforts from the previous week’s R&R Championships, saw them close out the evening sitting in second behind Sorrento, with Trigg Island coming through in third.
Conditions for Saturday and Sunday were perfect, with a slight offshore wind, small swell and tricky little bank which tripped up many an athlete!
First off on Saturday was the U11 and U13 1KM beach run, and it was fantastic to see one of our country athletes, Ginger Gleeson from Denmark Surf Life Saving Club, take the win in the U11 girl’s event.
North Cottesloe had a strong showing in the water, with wins in the U11 Male, U12 Male and Female, and U13 Female Surf Race; however, Sorrento continued to dominate, closing out the day nearly 90 points ahead of Trigg Island, who finished the day in second but only two points clear of Mullaloo!
Day 3 kicked off with the U10 and U12 1km beach run, finals of the Ironman and Ironwoman events, and the much-loved Grand Parade, where the athletes marched into the arenas to an eruption of applause from the spectators.
The rest of the day was jam-packed full of team events, including the Cameron Relay, Board Relay, and Surf Teams. Sorrento athletes showed their strength in the water, taking out wins in the U10 & U11 Female Board Relay, U10 & U12 Male Board Relay, U11 Female Surf Teams, and U10 & U11 Male Surf Teams.
Congratulations to Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club, our 2021 Nipper Champions!
1st: Sorrento – 388 points
2nd: Trigg Island – 256 points
