Surf Life Saving WA hosted more than 100 guests including athletes and their families, coaches, and club representatives at the official 2018 Western Suns State Team Launch held at Trigg Island SLSC on Sunday afternoon.
The official launch saw athletes and coaches selected in the 2018 Western Suns Ocean & Beach Interstate Team, Surf Rowers Interstate Team, and the Youth Development Squad presented with their official Engine Swim team uniforms and the 2018 team captains – Tom Nolan (North Cottesloe) and Jade Mickle (City of Perth) announced.
Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from former West Coast Eagle and Brownlow Medalist, Matt Priddis; and Olympic kayaker and Western Sun team member, Jesse Phillips. Being a former member of three Western Suns Teams, Matt spoke to the athletes about his experiences, what it taught him about life, and how that impacted and helped him in his football career. Jesse shared an equally inspiring speech including how proud he was to make his first Western Suns Interstate team and to represent WA, and the importance of working together as a group to create a stronger team.
Team members, selected based on their performance during the season at selection events, will go on to represent WA at a range of carnivals, kicking off with the Ocean & Beach Interstate Team this Friday at the SLS Interstate Championships in Moana, South Australia.
