Following a hugely successful event, which saw more than 1,400 athletes from across WA converge on Bunbury over the Australia Day long weekend earlier this year, Surf Life Saving WA (SLSWA) has announced they will return to Bunbury for the 2022 SunSmart Country Carnival.

Surf Life Saving WA President Craig Smith-Gander said the success of the 2021 carnival, the largest held in recent years, demonstrated the capacity of the City to host a sporting event of this scale, as well as the desire of the members to travel to a regional location like Bunbury for events.

“Earlier this year, members and their families from our 31 WA clubs converged on Bunbury where they enjoyed some fantastic conditions at Back Beach”, said Mr Smith-Gander.

“We are excited to be returning, for what will no doubt be another exceptional weekend of surf sports on our south-west coast”.

To be held from the 21st to 23rd January, the event will see athletes from seven years old through to masters compete in a range of surf life saving events, including the Ironman, beach sprints and flags, ski and board races, and surf boats.

Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said the City was thrilled to be hosting the carnival again.

“Just as it did earlier this year, this event attracts not only the 1400-odd athletes but their support staff, family and friends, along with competition officials to Bunbury,” Mayor Brennan said.

“So we’re not only getting the opportunity to watch some great sporting action on our beaches, but the economic and social benefits to our local retailers, hospitality venues and accommodation providers are massive.”

Mr Smith-Gander expressed his appreciation to the City of Bunbury for its support of both the City of Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club and SLSWA in bringing this event back to Bunbury.
