Rescue Crew
Tell us about your role?
Having just started working the role this season my experience is limited but am excited to grow as part of the Rescue Crew. My role as a Rescue Crew Officer means that I am responsible for working with the Pilot and Air Crew Officer to conduct daily surveillance patrols, looking for and taking action in response to different types of coastal hazards. If or when an incident occurs, I can be dispatched from the helicopter into the water or into land to rescue or render assistance. I am involved in ensuring we are always “rescue ready” in the event of a tasking.

Margaret River Rivermouth Beach
Favourite part of the job?
Diver drops and learning on the job.
What inspired you to join the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service?
Seeing the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter fly over my beach as a kid has made me want to work in it ever since I can remember. I love the professionalism and high-quality team that it possesses and am very keen to better myself whilst working on the service.
What motivates you to work for the service and help the community?
Seeing the positive outcomes that the service provides, this could include school visits that inspire the next generation of young lifesavers.
What advice would you give to those looking to become a crew member?
Apply to be a lifeguard for SLSWA and go through the lifeguard route first. This equips you with some of the needed qualifications and will give you valuable experiences such as working in a team. These skills and experiences will help when flying in the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.
Do you have any aspirations in aviation?
For now, I just want to gain experience in the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter getting hours flying this summer. Progressing to Air Crew in the future is a big aspiration of mine.
What do you think is the most important safety message you could share with the WA community as a crew member?
Use the beach safe app, read all signs, and get educated on surf safety through your local surf life-saving club.
