Rescue Crew

As a metros Rescue Crew Officer I sit in the right seat in the back of the helicopter, it’s my job to help the team to look out for people in distress or for any sharks that are around. If required, it’s also my role to jump out of the helicopter and perform a rescue or provide first aid.

Favourite WA Beach?

Grant Street Beach (North Cottesloe)

Favourite part of the job?

We have a special view from up in the aircraft, especially when it’s a Sunday morning, Nippers is on and all of the beaches and Surf Clubs are really busy. It’s a privilege to be able to watch all of the things that go on along our coast line and help keep people safe from such a unique perspective.

What inspired you to join the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service?

I’ve been involved with Surf Life Saving from a very young age and I’ve always thought that the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter is a really amazing and impressive aspect of the service that SLSWA provides. I interacted with the WLRH a lot through my previous roles at Surfcom and as a Lifeguard which motivated me to apply.

What motivates you to work for the service and help the community?

The WLRH has an opportunity to have a considerable impact on many people’s lives, whether it be preventatively through WA’s shark mitigation strategy or during an incident where we assist during a search, rescue or first aid. It feels really good when we’re able to make a difference in our role, and it’s what I would want someone to do for me.

What advice would you give to those looking to become a crew member?

Do as many Surf Life Saving higher awards as you can and do anything to gain more experience within SLSWA like becoming a Vice Captain/ Patrol Captain, teaching Bronze courses or applying for a job as a Lifeguard.

Do you have any aspirations in aviation?

I’d like to be involved in the Aeromedical industry one day

What do you think is the most important safety message you could share with the WA community  as a crew member?

Know the difference between waving to say hi and waving to request assistance!
