DAY ONE

The weekend started off with Trainers & Assessors arriving from all over our beautiful State, catching up over a cuppa at 12.30pm with neighbouring clubs, fellow T & A's and even meeting new contacts. There was even the odd keen participant at 9.00am!!

The conference started with a presentation by Scott Hine - SLSWA Marketing & Fundraising Manager, providing our T & A's with a sneak peak of the new brand role out. Although we had a few sound issues, the presentation provided food for thought and opened the lines of communication.

Further presentations enabled SLSWA to provide information on:

  • Responsiblities to assist with clarification of roles,

  • RTO and Training Package information highlighting the changes from TAA to TAE rolling out over the next 12 months

  • Updates on Proficiencies/Awards/Changes by SLSA and the progression of the Online Learning Tool.

Further information regarding the launch of the Online Learning Tool and Training opportunities will be circulated to the T & A group shortly via newsletter.

With the formal speeches out of the way, the group stopped for a short break, then gathered into their group for rotation around the Information Groups. These groups provided a variety of information from Commercial Opportunities for clubs and T & A's alike with Allison Miller, Assessment Structure processes with Anne-Marie, a review of VET Requirements with Christine and an overview of the Surfguard system as it related to Training & Assessing with Janie.

SUNDOWNER

The first day concluded at 5.00pm with a Sundowner for those who could stay. The Sundowner provided everyone with not only the opportunity for a well earned refreshment and bite to eat, but also the chance to discuss the days proceedings and network among clubs.

DAY TWO

Day 2 started bright and early, with everyone arriving ready to participate in the group workshop sessions. After a quick cuppa and catch up, everyone spread into their groups and tackled the learning resources and structures for selected assessment areas.

After a little discussion and clarification on the workshop purpose, all the groups were actively involved over the 1.5hours, pulling apart the learning materials, discussing club training techniques, taking notes and forming a joint consensus on appropriate techniques and suggestions. The buzz around the groups was great and it was encouraging to see the majority of all participants, taking the opportunity to participate and share their experience and point of view with the group.

With the break for morning tea over, our workshop groups prepared themselves for the delivery and filming of the presentations. Each group presented a short demonstration and discussion of their sections, with the floor opened after each for a few questions and pointers. The spinal/carries group allowed fellow T & A's Roy and Peter to impart some interesting information on what occurs during Spinal traumas. All agreed that this information should be captured and distributed to assist with training. The videos and notes from day 2 will be reviewed and will assist with the development of further Training Videos. These videos are available for all national surf clubs to use in their training courses. The information will also be used to determine the need for resource development groups/National Resource suggestions/alterations etc throughout the coming season.

Due to the tight time-frames of the conference, question time was extremely limited. Participants were encouraged to post queries on the "Discussion/Question" board and these are currently being reviewed to provide accurate answers. These will be posted on the website shortly. While this format can sometimes be frustrating for participants as they feel their questions are not being answered, it does allow for SLSWA to research and provide accurate answers and inform all Surf Clubs.

CLOSE

With 28 Surf Clubs across our large State, and over 300 Trainers and Assessors within those Clubs, the challenge of imparting new information, providing resources, and ensuring consistency amongst all is a large challenge undertaken by the Member Education Department at SLSWA. Holding State Conferences and In-Services throughout the season provide a much needed opportunity to pass across this information. This would not be possible without the Clubs and our wonderful Trainers and Assessors who give up their time to gain professional development and keep up-to-date with current requirements. On behalf of SLSWA we would like to say thank you to all who attended last weekend.
