Boardies Day is on again. This year on Friday 3 December, West Australians are encouraged to wear their board shorts or other beach-themed attire to work or school and make a donation to help West Australian volunteer surf lifesavers.

Boardies Day is an annual fundraising initiative of the Surf Life Saving Foundation and Surf Life Saving WA.

Part of what makes surf life savers so well respected is their willingness and ability to maintain a constant state of alertness on the beach during patrol, whether it be in wind, rain, or the baking hot Western Australian sun. It is critically important that the volunteers and guards on duty be aware that during the long hours of patrol, staying correctly hydrated will help their physical response during rescues and also protect their own health over the longer term.

Surf Life Saving’s Best Honoured at 2010 Awards of Excellence

More than 250 guests were on hand to honour Surf Life Saving’s best and bravest at the 2010 Surf Life Saving Australia Awards of Excellence, held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday 21st August.

Surf lifesavers and dignitaries from around the nation gathered to see David McLean from Marcoola Surf Life Saving Club in Queensland take out the prestigious DHL Surf Lifesaver of the Year award. McLean, who has been with Marcoola SLSC for 34 years, has played a key role in securing aerial surveillance on the Sunshine Coast during the 2010/11 season.

Final Round of the 2010/11 Board and Ski Series - Scarboro SLSC 5th September

The fourth round of the 2010/11 Board and Ski Series will take place at Scarboro SLSC this weekend (9am Sunday, 5th September 2010). The event will bring to a close the Board & Ski Series for this season.

On the weekend Secret Harbour SLSC put on a great day for the 100 competitors who entered the third round of the series. A small wave on the day made for enjoyable viewing for spectators and competitors alike.

No doubt there will be a few more thrills and spills at Scarboro SLSC this coming Sunday.

Surf Life Saving WA is pleased to be able to present the 2009/2010 Annual Report and Annual Review.

Both documents highlight Surf Life Saving WA's performance, key milestones and achievements over the 2009/2010 financial year.

In particular the Annual Review truly encapsulates and demonstrates all that Surf Life Saving WA is doing to carry out the mission statement of 'Saving Lives and Building Great Communities.'

Safe Clubs 4 Kids Receives Award from ICCWA

Safe Clubs 4 Kids is a program which was developed from the SLSWA Nippersafe program. Recently at the ICCWA (Injury Control Council of Western Australia) Community Safety Awards in the Community Innovation category, Safe Clubs 4 Kids received the Highly Commended Award.

Surf Life Saving WA, WA Sports Federation, Department of Sport and Recreation, WA Police Unit and the Working With Children Unit have been working together to provide organisations and clubs with all the information & resources to become Child Safe and Child Friendly - Safe Clubs 4 Kids.

Surf Safety Is More Than a Shark Attack Kit

In response to the tragic death of surfer Nick Edwards in Gracetown on Tuesday morning, there has been calls for ‘shark attack kits’ to be installed at remote WA beaches. Surf Life Saving Western Australia is supportive of working with State and Local Government in examining these proposed First Aid kits.

In the past three years 2 people have lost their lives at WA beaches as a result of shark attacks. Whilst tragic, in comparison over the past three years, 27 people have drowned at beaches not patrolled by Surf Life Saving WA services.
