Represent your club in the ultimate surf skills test

The inaugural Indian Ocean Classic is hitting Perth’s shores on 28 January giving surf life savers the chance to represent their clubs and test their athletic skills in the ultimate surf sports challenge.

This new mass participation event provides surf life savers with a great opportunity to team up with members of their club and compete as a team of four, or take on the course solo for a greater endurance challenge. Entrants will be vying for a stake in a $100,000 prize pool.

Entrants in the Indian Ocean Classic in the men’s and women’s open events will compete for A$15,000 in each category and other categories will award prizes worth A$20,000.

As well as representing their club, competitors will get the chance to test their skills against a team of IronMan legends including champion Guy Leech, six-time winner Trevor Hendy, ambassador for the sport Craig Riddington and champion-turned-coach Darren Mercer.
Channel Ten’s Bondi Rescue also has a team heading west and we may be able to see how their skills measure up to our WA Surf Life Savers.

The Indian Ocean Classic will take over beaches from Trigg to Cottesloe in a challenging four-stage event covering 25km and with the same categories as the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain IronMan series – ski, board, run and swim.

That weekend Perth will be immersed in surf sports action as the fourth leg of the Kellogg’s NutriGrain IronMan series follows the Indian Ocean Classic on Sunday 29 January, the first time the event has been in WA in 15 years.

As well as the race itself, the Indian Ocean Classic comprises plenty of other activities and entertainment. These include Surf Life Saving WA nipper clinics with IronMan legends on Friday 27 January, and a Surf Boat Race at Scarborough Beach on Saturday afternoon.

Online registration for the Indian Ocean Classic is now open. Competitors can take part in multiple age and entry categories.
