Surf Survival

Surf Life Saving Western Australia now offers the Surf Survival Certificate as an affordable option for educating students in community surf rescue and resuscitation skills. This award can be instructed by any suitably qualified school teacher and is assessed by a Surf Life Saving WA qualified assessor. Details of the Surf Survival Certificate are as follows:
 
Content (approx 12 hours teaching time)
• Surf safety (dangers at the beach, how to pick a safe place to swim)
• Surf skills and self rescue
• Rescue techniques
• First aid overview
• DRABCD and resuscitation
 
Assessment
• Multiple choice theory paper
• 100m-100m-100m run-swim-run fitness test
• Demonstration/interpretation of signals
• Demonstrated DRABCD and resuscitation
• Demonstrated surfboard/body board rescue

Student prerequisites
• Minimum 12 years of age on the day of assessment
• Complete a 150m swim in a swimming pool of no less than 25m without stopping, using either freestyle or breaststroke
• Complete a 2 min survival float
 
Trainer and assessor requirements
• The Surf Survival Certificate can be trained by a qualified teacher who holds a current Surf Rescue Certificate or higher
• The Surf Survival Certificate can only be assessed by a Surf Life Saving WA qualified assessor
 
Costs
• $300 per class of up to 35 students, plus an additional $7 per student to cover the workbook and certificates
• The $300 covers qualified assessor and all equipment for the two hour assessment, instructor delivery guide, CD with complimenting PowerPoint presentations and administration costs
• Additional costs may be added for travel if outside the metropolitan area
