Bronze Medallion & Cert II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)

All surf lifesavers in Western Australia complete their training through their local Surf Life Saving club for the Surf Life Saving Australia Bronze Medallion (Certificate II in Public Safety - Aquatic Rescue). The Bronze Medallion is a Nationally Recognised Qualification and teaches a range of activities in order to be able to perform all the basic requirements of a lifesaver:
• Occupational Health and Safety
• Beach types
• Wave patterns
• Currents
• Resuscitation
• First aid
• Communication techniques
• Radio communications
• Multiple rescue techniques
• Patrolling methods

 

Not sure you are ready for the Bronze Course but would like to be involved or not quite old enough??? Why not try the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) course first?

 

Course Outline

The Bronze course is usually run over a period of 6 - 8 weeks, involving both theory and practical sessions conducted at the candidates local Surf Club. The final assessment may take place at a centralised location in conjuction with other Surf Clubs.

The following Units of Competency will be assessed and issued as the Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) qualificiation:

PUAOHS001B - Follow defined OH&S policies and procedures

PUASAR012A - Apply surf awareness

PUAEME001B - Provide emergency care

PUACOM001B - Communicate in the workplace

PUAOPE002A - Operate communication systems & equipment

PUASAR009A - Participate in an aquatic rescue operation

PUATEA004B - Work effectively in a public safety organisation

PUATEA001B - Work in a team

Assessment

During the Final Assessment for the above award, you will be required to demonstrate the following:

  • 200m Run - 200m Swim - 200 Run in under 8.00 minutes
  • Demonstrate Radio Operations
  • Demonstrate Basic First Aid
  • Demonstrate 10 Signals
  • Demonstrate Lifts & Carries
  • Demonstrate Board and Tube Rescues
  • Demonstrate Spinal Management
  • Demonstrate Resuscitation & Defibrillation

Prerequisites

Minimum 15 years of age (on the day of final assessment)

Financial member of the Surf Club

Completed a 400m flat water swim in less than 9.00 minutes (signed off by an authorised club person)
