North Fremantle is a port suburb that lies wedged between the Indian Ocean and the Swan River mouth. Harbour entrance moles (training walls) and harbour facilities have modified the southern 1.5 km of what used to be a continuous sandy beach, including a new beach that has accumulated against the harbour walls. A 2.5 km long beach now runs north from the end of the harbour walls to rocky bluffs below the Vlamingh Memorial. The southern end of the beach is called Port Beach, the remainder Leighton and Mosman beaches. Roads leading to the port facilities parallel the back of the beaches, and there are a number of car parks which provide good access the length of both beaches. North of Leighton Beach calcarenite bluffs and reefs dominate the shore, with a narrow strip of sand divided by a central groyne into two narrow rocky beaches. Leighton Beach continues on from the centre of the foreland for another 1.5 km to the north. The northern section is also called Mosman Beach and terminates at the start of the bluff and rock outcrops. As at Port Beach, waves average about 1 m and the low tide bar and occasional rips continue up to the rocks. There are beach breaks along here during higher swell. The Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club has been patrolling Leighton beach since 1935, and also maintains the annex and patrol tower overlooking Port Beach. A separate Port Surf Life Saving Club operated at Port Beach between 1958 and 1976, when it was amalgamated with Fremantle SLSC, with the watch tower continuing to provide lifesaving services. Leighton Beach has a large car park around the surf club, which is flanked by a kiosk and changing rooms, with more car parks north of the surf club.
General Beach Hazard Rating: 4 - Moderately hazardous.

swimming
Port and Leighton beaches are both patrolled and have a relatively low hazard rating under normal low wave conditions. Port with slightly lower waves is considered the least hazardous beach. However waves larger than 1 m will produce a number of rips along the beach and deeper rip channels.
surfing
Port and Leighton usually provide low beach breaks, with most surfers heading for the breaks over the Cable Station reef and off the northern Dutch Inns bluffs, below the Vlamingh Memorial.
